One of Trader Joe's most popular products has just gotten its first-ever price increase. The popular grocery store chain recently raised the price of its individually-sold bananas by roughly 20%, to 23 cents from 19 cents. Trader Joe's bananas have cost 19 cents apiece since the chain first started selling them individually back in 2001. The never-changing price tag became a selling point for the fruit, with signage at some Trader Joe's locations boasting about the store's refusal to increase the cost of potassium-rich produce. The 19-cent bananas have proved so popular over the years that they recently made the Trader Joe's Product Hall of Fame.

New York CNN —Food prices have gone a bit bananas — and that includes a famously priced 19-cent fruit at Trader Joe’s. The snack-heavy grocer told CNN on Monday that it recently increased the price of the banana to 23 cents, a more than 20% increase. The 19-cent banana is a well-known deal at Trader Joe’s — so much so that it’s ranked as the favorite piece of produce by the company’s customers. However, CBS News reported that experts from the World Banana Forum in March warned that climate change and rising temperatures can drive up banana prices. Trader Joe’s noted it has been able to lower prices for some of its other produce, such as raw almonds, romaine hearts, organic tri-color bell peppers, and green onions.

The executives also tried to dispel a rumor that Trader Joe's trains employees to flirt with customers. But Trader Joe's is avoiding the option, one of its top executives said in an episode of the company's podcast. Basalone and Palbaum also tried to debunk another rumor: That Trader Joe's employees are trained to flirt with customers. Instagram and TikTok are filled with posts about Trader Joe's flirty cashiers. It might not be flirting, but Trader Joe's cashiers are certainly famous for asking customers about their day, their favorite foods, and other small-talk topics.

Trader Joe's has avoided offering delivery or pick-up orders for decades. According to an episode of Trader Joe's podcast, released on Monday: A combination of cost and company culture. Trader Joe's shoppers have been asking for the chain to provide delivery for years. Walmart has also expanded its grocery delivery capabilities, hiring drivers and offering unlimited deliveries for members of its own subscription program. Trader Joe's CEO Dan Bane will retire in July, the grocery store chain said on Monday. "I take great pride that together we have made Trader Joe's the best grocery store in America," Bane said, according to Trader Joe's. With Bane's retirement will come the promotion of Bryan Palbaum to Chairman and CEO and Jon Basalone to Vice CEO, Trader Joe's said. Under Bane, Trader Joe's stuck to a leaner operating strategy than most other US grocery stores. California-based Trader Joe's is owned by the same family who owns Aldi Nord, a German chain of discount grocery stores.
